Planet Fairfield, February 2025: Great Moments in a Small Iowa Town Music: Original flute and piano music by Karen Aoki Kouider and Werner Elmker. Karen Aoki Kouider is an accomplished flute virtuoso, improviser and composer. She grew up in Tokyo, Japan, where she trained under Lorant Kovacs, visiting professor from the Liszt Academy in Budapest, Hungary, and Sanae Nakayama, professor of flute at the Musashino Academy of Music in Tokyo. She was also influenced by the rich classical music tradition in Tokyo. In 2005, she received her Bachelor’s Degree in Flute Performance from the Eastman School of Music, where she studied with Bonita Boyd. She has taken master classes with Jacques Zoon and Peter Lloyd at the Oxford Flute Summer School in Oxford, England, and with Thomas Robertello. She has also taken private lessons at the Tanglewood Institute with Fenwick Smith of the Boston Symphony and has participated in music festivals around the country and in Austria. Werner Elmker is an independent Danish/American multimedia artist specializing in videography, photography, graphic design and piano/keyboard/vocal music. He holds a doctoral level degree in piano from The Royal Academy of Music. University music professor in USA for 12 years creating and directing a Music Department and an Ethnomusicology Institute. More than 40 years experience of music teaching. Breaking free from the rigors of the classical music world, he has embraced the spontaneity of blues, rock and jazz, later amassing an impressive collection of improvised recordings of solo piano, featuring his uniquely soothing style. In his visual and musical creations, Werner emphasizes the importance of improvisation as the primary source of all great art forms.
